Gotta get down on friday. We made pigs you guys! Actualmente, they were piggy banks. Part of Megan's curriculum is to teach the kids about saving money. Before the kids came we went over the lesson plan and brainstormed activities (and made some rather sad looking piggy banks). After lunch we set up and waited for the kids to trickle in. No lie, these kids were absolutely adorable. One of our ideas was to play various games with the kids and give the winners paper money. We set up this little shop with erasers, stickers, bouncy balls, etc and let the kids spend their money or save for a bigger toy. Then we got to the messy part. Paint was all over the place after making the piggy banks. Some of the boys complained about everything being so pink, but overall I think they had a great time. I can't wait to see them next week. I slept outside until dinner (and was pretty much eaten alive by bugs). After dinner we started our 8 to midnight shift at Camaronal. As I mentioned in my last post, this is the beach were a majority of the sea turtles lay their eggs. Unfortunately, sea turtle eggs are a delicacy in Costa Rica and poachers have been harming the population of sea turtles. What the volunteers basically do is walk up and down the 5km beach, track poachers, dig up eggs, and relocate them. Each turtle can lay up to 120 eggs and there about a couple hundred turtles a night. The volunteers work in 4hr shifts through the night and then sleep in what literally is a shack (the hammocks are surprisingly comfortable though). Tonight we worked with a girl from Austria, a girl from Germany, a guy from Italy, a guy from New York (via Ecuador), and some kid who didn't really talk much. I felt like a spy on an important mission. I was stocked with my skele-toes and a super awesome red flashlight (white light wasn't allowed). I hope we get to come back for another night.
